  1. IBM PC and Compatibles:
  2.     The World Factbook data can be accessed in a variety of ways.
  3.     
  4.     There are 2 directories of additional resource materials beyond
  5.     what is available directly within the World Factbook Database.
  6.           * MAPS folder has the maps for the 247 countries in the
  7.              following formats: PICT, PCX, and TIFF -- with and without
  8.              city names.  These are made available for import into your
  9.              graphics program.
  10.           * DATABASE folder has numerical data in a variety of formats
  11.              so that you can import them into your favorite database or
  12.              spreadsheet program and compare the data about all the
  13.              countries!  -- Find out which country has the lowest or 
  14.              highest birth rate / death rate / economic growth rate 
  15.              / GNP / etc.

  17.     **** WINDOWS -- NEW FOR THIS RELEASE ****
  18.     In Windows we have built a ToolBook "book" to access the data in the
  19.     following ways: search for country names, search for any text 
  20.     using "ROMWARE", find countries geographically, "zoom" in or out 
  21.     of geographic regions, and finally select countries alphabetically.
  22.     All you need is Windows, a run-time version of ToolBook is provided.
  23.     Features include: color maps of each country and region, text
  24.     descriptions of each country, ROMWARE search, and on-line help.
  25.     The DOS version below has additional text appendices about world
  26.     organizations.

  28.     **** DOS ****
  29.     For DOS we have a full database in TextWare, which includes text
  30.     descriptions of each country, color maps for each country,
  31.     and text appendices about the United Nations, world 
  32.     organizations, and measurements.

  39. WINDOWS:
  40.     You must have Windows 3.0 or above.
  41.     Options:
  42.     ** Run from DOS without installing anything, steps:
  43.         1. You must be in the drive that contains the CD.
  44.             (Do this by typing the letter that is the CD drive,
  45.             E.G. type "E:"
  46.             where E is the letter assigned to the your CD drive.)
  47.         2. Type "cd \windows" to get into the WINDOWS directory.
  48.         3. Type "WWFB", which runs a batch file from DOS that
  49.             launches Windows with Toolbook and opens the 
  50.             World Factbook "Book".
  51.     ** Run from DOS and install a Program Manager ICON, steps:
  52.         1. You must be in the drive that contains the CD.
  53.             (Do this by typing the letter that is the CD drive,
  54.             E.G. type "E:"
  55.             where E is the letter assigned to your CD drive.)
  56.         2. Type "cd \windows" to get into the WINDOWS directory.
  57.         3. Type "WFBINST", which runs a batch file from DOS that
  58.             launches windows and installs a program ICON into
  59.             a new group. The program asks you the letter of your  
  60.             CD-ROM and the new name for the program manager group.
  61.             This only needs to be done once! Then you can run 
  62.             from windows after the one-time installation.
  63.     ** Run from WINDOWS install a Program Manager ICON, steps:
  64.         1. Launch windows
  65.         2. Do "New" from the program manager menu
  66.         3. Specify the new items "Properties"
  67.             command line: x:\windows\tbook.exe x:\windows\wwfb1991.tbk
  68.             working dir:  x:\windows
  69.             WHERE x is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  70.     ** Consult your window documentation for other options.

  73. DOS:
  74.     One of the batch files in the DOS directory will get you started.
  75.     Steps required:             
  76.         1. You must be in the drive that contains the CD.
  77.             (Do this by typing the letter that is the CD drive,
  78.             E.G. type "E:"
  79.             where E is the letter assigned to your CD drive.)
  80.         2. Type "cd \dos" to get into the DOS directory.
  81.         3. If you have a VGA or Better Monitor type VGA
  82.             This is a batch file that starts TextWare with color images.
  83.         4. If you have a Hercules or Monochrome Card, type HERC
  84.             This is a batch file that starts TextWare with black and
  85.             white images.
  86.         5. Other monitor types:
  87.             See the "OTHER.TXT" file in the "DOS" directory.
  88.             Use the OTHER.BAT batch file using the directions
  89.             in the "OTHER.TXT" file.
  90.         6. Hints and tips:
  91.             * press the escape key to get past the first screen.
  92.             * press F1 for on-line help.
  93.             * The data starts with an Introduction on card 1 
  94.               and has a table of contents on card 2.
  95.                (type:  "CARD 1"  or "CARD 2")
  96.             * press the escape key to back out of an operation.
  97.         7. For more detailed help, type "TWDOC". This batch file will
  98.             run TextWare with the on line TextWare Manual.
